Zirconia (ZrO2) is a very strong technical ceramic with excellent properties in hardness, fracture toughness, and corrosion resistance; all without the most common property of ceramics – high brittleness. It is even more durable than the conventionally used alumina since solid zirconia contain stabilisers, such as magnesium oxide or yttrium oxide.

Moreover zirconia (ZrO2) is a ceramic material with adequate mechanical properties for manufacturing of medical devices. Bakony is using zirconia stabilized with Y2O3 has the best properties for these applications. When a stress occurs on a ZrO2 surface, a crystalline modification opposes the propagation of cracks. Compression resistance of ZrO2 is about 2000 MPa.
